Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, whose tenure ends on August 26, recommended Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as his successor on Thursday.
This comes hours after the official communication from the Ministry of Law and Justice was received by the CJI to recommend his successor.
The CJI personally handed over the copy of his letter of recommendation to Justice Lalit. He also forwarded it to the Ministry of Law and Justice for further consideration.
CJI Ramana, who succeeded his predecessor SA Bobde as the 48th Chief Justice of India on April on April 24, 2021, is scheduled to leave office on August 26 after a tenure of more than 16 months.
